Everyone simply loves to see the elephants in Cambodia. You are able to take part in two completely different elephant experiences. You can choose to include either a day elephant trekking or a day at an elephant sanctuary as part of your package or you can take our popular 4 day/3 night elephant experience package – Cambodian Elephant Adventure Tour. We feel happy offering both experiences to you as we believe that the elephants that we use for trekking are treated extremely well and suffer no abuse. However we also believe in the great work undertaken at the elephant sanctuary where abused or overworked elephants get to enjoy their retirement. You can decide which elephant experience you would prefer to include!
If you would like to spend a day trekking with elephants in Cambodia as part of your package, your day will start at 8.30am. First, you will be taken to the Phnong minority village where your elephant and local guide will be waiting to greet you. The elephant will take you through some stunning jungle, across rivers and past some local minority farms before ending up at the Trok River for lunch. During lunch the elephants are released and free to wander around the forest to rest and to scavenge for food. After lunch you will then search for your elephant with your guide. You and the elephant will then go down to the river for a wash and to cool off. During this time you can either watch from the river bank or go for a swim and help wash your elephant. In the afternoon you will head back to the village on a different forest trail, arriving back at approximately 3pm, were you will be picked up and taken back to Sen Monorom.
*Please note that you will have to travel to the North-East province of Mondulkiri to participate in this activity.
After you have returned from your Elephant Trekking experience, we introduce you to a local Phnong family that you will be sharing dinner with. You are then free to explore the village as well as playing games with some of the local children. Once the village elders return from their day working in the fields you can help prepare a traditional evening meal with your new adopted family and enjoy a fabulous cultural evening before returning back to your hotel.
To completely immerse yourself in traditional life, why not spend longer with your new family? If you feel brave, join in with a few glasses of the local rice wine before spending the night in a traditional Phnong hut. We will supply you with special hammocks and breakfast the following morning before returning you to town the next day.
After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the nearby elephant sanctuary, situated 11km from town. One of only a handful of elephant sanctuaries in the world, you will start your visit with an introduction to the herd of elephants in their forest habitat. You have the chance to get to know more about their history, character, behaviour and body language while walking alongside them in their natural environment. The aim of the sanctuary along with the support of the Bunong villagers is to rescue and treat elephants who have suffered injury and abuse. After pausing for lunch, you will undertake a walking trek with the elephants through the stunning Mondulkiri countryside where eventually you will reach a waterfall. Here you can take a refreshing swim and watch the elephants bathe. For the rest of the day you will be able to help with maintaining the elephant environment and continue shadowing their natural movements.
